Breathing with the Planet Meditation

This is one of my favorite meditations for feeling connected to vast webs of life, and even a spiritual connection to the very sun, moon, and planet we’re spinning around on. I first started thinking about this after hearing Jennifer Pearcy’s wonderful “Yoga Nidra for Sleep” meditation on Insight Timer.

I recommend preparing with some mental images, to minimize thought time when you could be tripping on the symmetry of it all:

  1. Waves lapping calmly on a beach
  2. Clouds building over a body of water, and pouring out rain – like a Florida thunderstorm
  3. The most beautiful sunrise and most beautiful sunset you’ve ever seen. See the colors on the clouds, the pinks and oranges and blues. Picture it, the light bouncing off the clouds as they stretch across the horizon. 
  4. The full moon over a silver landscape. 
  5. Deciduous trees through the seasons. Maybe it’s a single tree. Maybe it’s a row of trees along a street in your neighborhood. Maybe it’s a forest. Hold a picture in your mind of this treescape through the seasons, changing from bare brown branches to pink spring blossoms to green leaves to the orange and red of fall, and back to bare branches again.

Man, these images make me feel more happy already. Here we go!
